Team chief Maurizio Arrivabene shrugged off criticism from a collection of armchair strategists who have (un)informed him (without data) that the 2-stop strategy during the race at Monza would have been better. He’s admitted that the Ferrari pit-wall have had a laugh at the aftermath of negativity after the teams finish of 3rd and 4th, some outlets relentless in their pursuit to disprove the workings of the team. After the race, Arrivabene said,
“I was hearing some comments that maybe one stop was a better strategy, I just laughed with our engineers about this…
You have to protect yourself, if you go for one stop. We were doing the opposite. We were aggressive. If we did the same strategy as them, we would be 11 seconds slower than we were – so, for us, we were on the faster strategy.

Ferrari have been very late to the party in terms of getting tyre strategy right, so maybe the laughter in the Ferrari garage was tainted with a slight hint of relief. The team admitted to getting the tyre strategy completely wrong after the opener in Australia and in Montreal more recently. It has become the natural knee-jerk reaction to assume that Ferrari have got the strategy wrong on the rubber, so maybe this is why so many thought they’d made the wrong call.
Vettel’s reaction is a bit more collected, he’s clearly aware that this is the first weekend in a while that the team have nailed the strategy and extracted the most out of the weekend. The four-time World Champion said,
“We knew it would be tough against Mercedes and it was, but we did a great job, finished third and fourth, which is the optimum we could get. We had a different strategy. We had fresher tyres at the end, so it was expected that we would be quicker and catching up, but it was not enough to put them under pressure.
We extracted our best race and it has been a while since that’s been the case.”

Ferrari are expected to fall back again in Singapore with Red Bull eyeing a legitimate challenge to the Mercedes. Whilst tyre strategy will remain relevant around Marina Bay, having a chassis that can generate high levels of downforce will be more crucial to success on the street circuit. That’s a certainty.
