Dan Olsen Retracts Scathing Comments About Tiger Woods

EP Header

What do you think of the worst Tiger Woods criticism yet? It’s coming from Dan Olsen, the 48-year-old former pro who last played on the PGA Tour at the 2011 PGA Championship. He’s had a lot to say these days about Woods.

Olsen, who in recent years has spent time as a caddie and golf instructor, told 730AM The Game in Lansing, Michigan Friday that “I heard he’s on a month’s suspension…It’s kind of a strong witness. It’s a credible person who is telling me this.”

Olsen didn’t stop there. Among other things, Olsen accused Woods of using performance enhancing drugs and playing with illegal golf balls.

“It’s not testosterone, but it’s something else,” Olsen told the station. “I think when it’s all said and done, he’s gonna surpass Lance Armstrong with infamy.”

Immediately following Olsen’s comments, everyone from Nike, to Woods’ agent to the PGA Tour came out to strongly deny the allegations.

Yesterday, Olsen backed off.

“Everything I said on that radio interview was only my opinion and not based on any firsthand knowledge or facts,” Olsen told ESPN.com. “I want to make a full retraction to everything I said for the entire radio interview, and I apologize to Tiger, Nike, Phil [Mickelson], [commissioner] Tim Finchem and the PGA Tour.”

Our Take

Did Olsen cross the line? These are by far the most scathing comments on Woods yet. Recently, everyone from Butch Harmon to Jack Nicklaus to even Kid Rock has offered an opinion on the 14-time major winner.

Olsen spent one full season on tour in 2004 and from all accounts doesn’t know Woods personally. He did make an immediate retraction of his statements. We wonder if it’s because the relatively unknown player made all of it up or if there are lawyers breathing down his neck. The tour has been testing for PEDs since 2008 and is also required to announce a suspension of any kind. Is there something fishy going on here? Only time will reveal the truth…or maybe we will never know.

“I’ll be looked at as just some crazy f— nobody making accusations about Tiger,” Olsen said on Monday.

At least one thing Olsen said seems accurate.
