Just what is it about TPC Sawgrass’ 17th hole that mystifies even the greatest of PGA Tour pros? It’s just a 123-yard par 3, which is nothing more than a cut-down pitching wedge for the professionals. And still – the pressure of the tournament, and perhaps the hole’s reputation alone as an island green makes it one of the hardest (and most famous) holes in all of golf.
There were quite a few splashes on Day 1 -poor Brooks Koepka put two into the drink. Dustin Johnson, one of the longest hitters on tour, went triple bogey at the 17th.
Check out this GIF from the PGA Tour that sums up every tee shot from 17 on Thursday, the opening round of the 2015 Players Championship. Last year, 28 balls found the drink? Over/under 28 this year?

Plenty of splashes today at the island 17th. There were 28 water balls in all four rounds combined last season. pic.twitter.com/gNFsyu4QoK
