Patrick Reed made it onto the Telegraph’s list of the most hated sportsmen in the world. Known for being unrepentantly uncouth and arrogant on course, Reed is so unpopular that he needed a police escort to depart Gleneagles. What are some of the things he’s done to earn public ire?
Patrick Reed was on his way to becoming admired, if not universally celebrated, last year at the Ryder Cup. He had just scored an impressive putt on hole 7, an achievement worthy of a round of applause. But when supporters gave it to him, he was the opposite of thankful. In fact, he placed his finger to his lips and shushed them all. His cavalier ingratitude resulted in the police escort from Gleneagles and his transformation into a ludicrous Twitter meme.
When he was playing at the WGC-HSBC Championship in Shanghai last year, he still lacked a filter. Or at least, an awareness that he was being very closely monitored by mics and cameras. He was caught on mic directing a foulmouthed homophobic rant at himself after missing a 5-foot putt. In his own words, “Nice f***ing three putt, you f***in faggot.” Not very classy at all, or very bright. He apologized in public after a lot of backlash, but he’s certainly left a bad taste lingering in his wake anyway.
Do you hate Patrick Reed as much as the world (or at least, the Telegraph) does? Or does someone else make you want to take a driver to them?
