- Lexi Thompson tries new putting technique
- Many pro golfers have putt with their eyes closed
Lexi Thompson is now putting with her eyes closed. This sounds pretty ridiculous, but it’s an actual thing that many golfers have done before. Former World No. 1 Vijay Singh did it for a while during his career, saying that it gave him more freedom to feel the putt over being too technical.
“It feels like I’m burning a hole through the golf ball with my eyes (open),” said Thompson.
Lexi said she putted with her eyes open last week on a long putt at the Pure Silk Bahamas LPGA Classic and hit it 10 feet past the hole. She then closed her eyes and drained the second putt.
Putting is a crucial part of the golf, which puts a lot of pressure on professionals during their short game. Without having to think about looking at either the ball or the hole, professionals can just putt with feeling and alleviate some of their tension. Lexi has birdied seven of 18 holes during her first round 69 at the Coates Golf Championship, so it’s obviously working for her.
“I basically just feel it in my stroke and take a deep breath.”
