- The WGC Cadillac kicks off on Thursday, one year after Rory’s famous club throw.
- The world number three was presented the club by Donald Trump.
It’s well known that the players don’t like playing at Doral; Rory confirmed this last year when he put two pieces of his property into the same lake.
The Blue Monster course is always upsetting players. Last year it was tricked up so badly that the PGA was reportedly inundated with players whining about the difficulty. Last year it was the guys who couldn’t drive it more than 290, this year it will probably go the other way as the fairways have been narrowed beyond 310 yards.
At $1.62 million for the winner, this year’s purse is absolutely staggering! No wonder Rory felt the need to vent his frustration. Throwing the club on Saturday, Rors played the rest of the round without a 3-iron. Enter Donald Trump.
The presidential hopeful sent a scuba diver out to retrieve the tossed 3-iron, before presenting it to the golfer on the range.
We can learn a lot from this episode. Firstly, Trump is incredibly adept at spotting a situation that can elevate his position amongst players and people, it’s a hell of a gift and something opponents have ineptly addressed for the duration of his campaign. Candidates will be better placed when they work out his PR savviness is unparalleled. Best to ignore the games he will always win.
