There’s always that list that you have of players you wish had played in the Premier League at their peak; Francesco Totti, Raul and Clarence Seedorf are just three in a long and talented list of names.
One player who certainly makes that list – for me – is Luca Toni, with the former Italian international’s consistently prolific career nothing short of remarkable.
The best thing about the former Bayern Munich forward is that, like a fine wine, his goalscoring form his improved as his career has gone one. The fact that Toni was joint-top scorer in Serie A last season with 22 goals says everything you need to know about the now retired striker.
“I should have stopped four or five years ago, but I kept on scoring so I continued to play.
“It was only after I spoke to my family that I decided to end this wonderful career.”
In true baller style, Toni not only decided to hang up his boots one game before the end because, when you’re Luca Toni, you can call the shots. He also signed off with the cheekiest of Panenka penalties to score against his former club Juventus and help the already relegated Hellas Verona end the Old Lady’s 26-match unbeaten run in Serie A.
