Setting the scene, the 2006 Ryder Cup:
Darren Clarke lost his wife Heather to cancer shortly after the 2006 year’s Open Championship, with Clarke subsequently halting all his playing commitments. This decision changed when a wildcard selection enabled him to make the Ryder Cup and fulfil Heather’s dying wish that he should play.
What followed was a performance that will go down in Ryder Cup history. Clarke secured a win in each of his three matches, providing a precious contribution to Europe’s 18½-9½ win.
The Irish crowd gave him a phenomenal reception as walked to play his first game.
