With the exit of Nike from the golf club industry, golfers like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy will be needing some new sticks for their game.
While these two golfers are on the lookout for new clubs, the companies are stirring their pots as well. Who wouldn’t want Rory McIlroy or Tiger Woods on their roster?
It turns out one company doesn’t want Tiger Woods to sign with them. PXG, the new kids on the block (expensive kids), don’t think that Woods would be a good fit for their brand.
“There’s no doubt that Tiger has been an icon in the game, that no one has done as much for golf as anyone in history and he’s highly respected for that,” PXG and GoDaddy.com founder Bob Parsons told Golf Digest. “But I don’t know that his game is what it once was.”
They’re not wrong, but I don’t think the value of a golfer, especially Tiger Woods, can be diminished by taking some time off because of an injury. Sure they want what’s best for their clubs RIGHT NOW, but I think Woods is a high commodity no matter what his present state is. It may be a risk but I think he’s worth it.
On the other hand, PXG is looking forward to the prospect of gaining other golfers like Rory McIlroy or Brooks Koepka.
“Rory’s somebody to get excited about.”
“And I think there are two other guys that have a lot of potential and that’s Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau. Both of those are guys we had conversations with before they signed with Nike when Nike wrote them a big check. We’d probably want to chat with Michelle Wie, too,” said Parsons.
So basically they want to talk to everyone that Nike dropped, except Tiger Woods. Seems like a low blow to me. Whatever! It’s their company, their rules!
