Luka Modric was voted the worst signing in La Liga. Seriously.

Luka Modric as the league’s worst signing? Sometimes in football, decisions can simply baffle you. But often, it’s football fans that will confuse you the most. We can’t imagine what the readers of MARCA were thinking in 2012 when they voted the Croatian, who is arguably the game’s best central midfielder, as La Liga’s worst signing.

MARCA seem to know every detail about upcoming Los Blancos signings. A story is reported and before you know it, Guillem Balague is on the phone to Sky Sports. But who is reading this newspaper? Real Madrid fans that are never happy? Their fanbase is almost impossible to please at times.

When you sign a player who can do this, you would expect a little more patience from fans. Modric clearly had plenty of talent back then, but just as Gareth Bale was booed by Madrid fans, the Croatian midfielder clearly wasn’t favoured much either. So how do you please the Santiago Bernabeu crowd? Modric was never going to arrive and score 20+ goals – they must have only watched his YouTube best goals video.

Luka Modric is the complete technical footballer; a player who has never needed to rely on pace or strength, unrivalled by most in technical ability and intelligence.

The Croat Galactico is not the story of a player who revived his career after a poor start, nor was he a work in progress. Modric’s quality was obvious at Spurs, in much more competitive games. The MARCA readers who voted in the poll were simply wrong here – gravely wrong. After the result of this poll, MARCA shouldn’t have held another one ever again.

And now, the Croatian man was voted into the FIFPro World XI for the second year in a row. Although there are some questionable additions in the world XI, Modric certainly isn’t one of them; there’d have been outrage if he was omitted; no place for the indispensable maestro, who is key to Real Madrid’s playing style? Do me a favour.

For a league that is stacked with talent, you’d expect that the fans are able to notice a quality player when they see one, but that was never the case when they acquired the former Spurs star. You can only laugh at the idea of La Liga fans clicking the name of Luka Modric as they submitted their vote for the league’s worst signing. Mercifully, at least no one will take notice anymore. Silly award, anyway.
