In case you haven’t heard, the Houston Rockets are available for purchase. Considering Houston’s status as a top-ten media market and the fact that NBA franchises rarely become available for sale, current owner Leslie Alexander could pull in as much as $2 billion for the team. Now that’s a pretty penny. While there aren’t too many people who can afford this level of purchase, we believe these potential buyers could be in the ballpark.
Fertitta, the billionaire CEO/owner of Landry’s Inc., has already expressed an interest in buying the Rockets. The Texas native used to own a major share of the Houston Texans, but was forced to give it up due to his stake in Golden Nugget Casinos. The NBA, however, does not prohibit team owners from investing in gambling businesses.
Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale
“Mattress Mack” McIngvale, owner of the Gallery Furniture retail chain, has also expressed an interest in purchasing the Rockets. “I have an affinity for the Rockets,” McIngvale said. “Mr. Alexander did a great job with the Rockets. I hope whoever the new owner is will bring some more championships to the city.” If we were to root for any local to win the ownership bid, it would definitely be the guy nicknamed “Mattress Mack.”
Technically, an NBA player cannot own the team he plays for — unless he owns the parent company that owns the team. James idolizes guys like Michael Jordan and Jay-Z, superstars in their field who leveraged their status into a second career in business. James has expressed interest in owning a franchise one day — why not the one he plays for? A Rockets squad with LeBron, James Harden and banana boat bestie Chris Paul would certainly be a top title contender.
Bridgeman, who recently sold his restaurant franchises to become a Coca-Cola distributor, played 12 NBA seasons for the Bucks and Clippers. He previously made a push to buy the Atlanta Hawks, but was unsuccessful.
Beyonce and Jay-Z
Beyonce and Jay-Z are two of the most popular and rich people on the planet. Hov previously owned a small stake in the Nets, but this time around, the dynamic couple could join forces, as Beyonce is a Houston native.
McNair, the current owner of the Texans, has already come out and said he isn’t interested, but people are known to change their minds. NFL rules allow McNair to simultaneously own the Rockets and Texans, so if he’s really focused on winning championships — as he said in his statement — it would make most sense for him to buy the Houston team closest to winning one.
With a net worth of $7 billion, Kinder is the richest Houston-area resident. That’s more than enough dough, if he wants to buy the team.
Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady
Yao and Tracy are already two of the most beloved Rockets stars in franchise history — why not become the most beloved owners, too? Yao, who currently owns the Shanghai Sharks of China’s National Basketball League, and McGrady could even team up with Beyonce and Jay-Z. We can’t imagine too many Houston fans would be mad with that squad.
The Texas native Bush recently joined up with Derek Jeter to attempt to buy the Miami Marlins, but their bid fell short. The son and brother of former presidents, Jeb could finally step out of his family’s massive shadow as an NBA owner.
Duncan and his siblings inherited the oil and gas fortune left behind by their father Dan, the co-founder of Enterprise Products. They have the money to make this happen if they want it.
Regardless of who the new owner is, the Rockets are in good shape to make noise in the post-season after picking up Chris Paul, but unfortunately for the city of Houston, they’ll have to dispatch the Golden State Warriors before
