Wherever Larry Eustachy has gone, controversy has usually followed. Currently the head coach for the Colorado State men’s basketball team, Eustachy has recently come under fire after an investigation revealed that some of his coaching tactics might have, “crossed the line.”
In a recent article published by the Coloradoan newspaper, the school reportedly conducted an investigation during the 2013-14 season to find out how Eustachy was coaching and treating his players. During the investigation, 14 of that season’s players and other staff members in the school’s athletic department were interviewed over a 99-day period.
Apparently the coach went full Bobby Knight during his early days at the school.

The investigation featured evidence of Eustachy constantly demeaning and berating his players and coaches, throwing chairs, breaking wipe-off boards, and even chucking soda cans at walls. These coaching tactics may have worked back in the 70s and 80s, but most players of today will not continue playing for a coach that shows them such a high level of disrespect.
That differing mentality between Eustachy and his players may be why seven of them have transferred out of Colorado State during the coach’s five years at the school.
A few of his players at Colorado State including current forward J.J. Avila and former point guard Jon Octeus have defended their coach and his tactics saying that, “playing for Eustachy is difficult and some players couldn’t handle it.”
But many others do not think that this is just a case of some players being a bit too sensitive.
“If we recorded audio, Eustachy would have been fired a long time ago.”
– Unidentified former Colorado State basketball player
Despite his strategy to emotionally abuse his players, Eustachy is still the current men’s basketball coach at the school.
It likely has to do with the fact that he has the highest winning percentage of any head men’s basketball coach in the school’s history. Or that he helped Colorado State rank in the Associated Press’ Top 25 poll during the 2012-13 season for the first time since 1954.
Despite the emotional damage he may have previously caused to his players, Eustachy remains the coach at Colorado State. (Photo Source: Twitter)
Once again, winning trumps almost anything. Especially for schools like Colorado State, whose men’s basketball program has never been known to be successful during its existence.
So Eustachy’s job remains intact, despite emotionally scarring some of his former players enough that it caused some of them to leave for another school.
But hey, who cares about human decency as long as the team is winning? Right Colorado State?
