For the past few months, Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather have been sparring words to organise a fight that we all want to see. It looks like it’s going to happen, but we can’t imagine McGregor being involved in the future of stadium-filled cage fighting for much longer.
The most recent statement from the guy who “runs dis fooking city in a tailor-measured sewwwt” was typically direct and unfazed.
“F—k Floyd. Trust me, this whole boxing world don’t know what they’re going to see when I roll in here. I’m unpredictable. Nobody knows what they’re in for. Everybody’s writing me off. They’re going to be in shock. Make no mistake about it.”
Can you imagine the same level of “McGregorness” precluding a fight with a fifteen-foot mech?

MegaBots has ambitions to fill stadiums with brutal cage matches between giant mechs. The idea emerged when a Californian tech firm challenged a Tokyo heavy industries company to build a mech and fight. A successful crowdfunding campaign followed and two fully operational metallic warriors have been created.
A date is yet to be confirmed for the fight, but like the McGregor/Mayweather situation, traction is building due to a massive demand. The MegaBots founders state,
“MegaBots is not about building a single robot or fighting a single duel against Japan. MegaBots is about empowering robot pilots and teams from around the world to field their own giant, human-piloted robot, and then hosting epic live-action sporting events where teams compete for glory, the honor of their fans, and the chance to become the world’s ultimate mech champion.”
Business Insider has anticipated this to be the next billion dollar sports league. It encapsulates combat, programming, robotics and keeps the human element of sport with pilots controlling the mechs.

With the understanding and use of robotics rising exponentially, a league like MegaBots could very well be the next big thing, with most seeing it as an unexpected hybrid between the UFC and Motorsport. McGregor doesn’t have to worry about a mech fighting league stepping on his toes, no tailor will be putting a chainsaw-wielding heap of rust into a three-piece anytime soon.
