David Haye’s embarrassment from the Tony Bellew defeat was that damaging that it’s had many asking for the Englishman’s retirement; the endless ‘dad bod’ comments, and arrogance at which Haye delivered before the fight led many boxing fans calling for the defeat of the former heavyweight champion.
If Haye wasn’t calling out the Bomber on shows such as Soccer AM, he was digging out Bellew’s fans, and sometimes, his own fans:
With the result being an 11th-round stoppage, after Haye’s camp threw in the towel, it’s caused a split between Haye and his coaching team, and making the Englishman a laughing stock of the heavyweight division.
To add further insult to injury, following Haye’s comments in the build-up to the fight; the 36-year-old has now been fined £25,000 by the British Boxing Board of Control.
In fairness to the Hayemaker, he has accepted that such comments were out of order after showing a degree of remorse, as he continues his comeback following the surgery to his achilles.
“Some of the comments went too far. If I have to pay a fine, I’ll happily pay and take whatever punishment I need to.”
— David Haye
Whether Haye can comeback from the defeat is yet to be seen; but one thing that’s for certain is that he’s miles away from the world title fight he dreamt of when coming back from retirement in 2016.
