9th of June, a 78-year-old man is taken to hospital for injuries he’s sustained in a car crash; the crash involved seven-time Grand Slam winner, Venus Williams, who reportedly crashed into the man at an intersection in Florida.
Jerome Barson, victim in the crash has now sadly passed away following the injuries he suffered. Mr Barson was travelling with with his wife, and witnesses reported that Williams was at fault for crashing into the couple’s car.
Williams has maintained to police that she did not see the couple and that she was driving slowly:
“Ms Williams entered the intersection on a green light. The police report estimates that Ms Williams was travelling at 5mph when Mrs Barson crashed into her.
“Authorities did not issue Ms Williams with any citations or traffic violations. This is an unfortunate accident and Venus expresses her deepest condolences to the family who lost a loved one.”
— Malcolm Cunningham, Venus Williams’ lawyer
It’s another moment which brings the Williams’ sisters into the headlines outside of tennis, following Serena Williams’ war of words in the media this week with John McEnroe.
Venus herself is set to start her Wimbledon campaign next week, as Serena remains on the sidelines with the announcement of her pregnancy; Venus is ranked 10th seed heading into the tournament.
In what will be Venus’ 20th Wimbledon, the terrible passing of Mr Barson may inhibit the seven-time Grand Slam winner competing at the tournament.
