The Australian sensation just proved to the entire paddock who is the best driver in Formula One with sizzling display around the streets of Monaco.
Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo took an epic pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix ahead of Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton.
Ricciardo, who is arguably the quickest man in the sport, beat Rosberg by 0.169 seconds. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton’s frustrations continued as his Mercedes let him down for a fourth time this year after a hydraulic pressure issue. This meant Hamilton only had one run compared to everyone else’s two. He ended the day 0.320secs off the pace.
The best place to get your first pole position
Ricciardo’s pole was his first in the sport, despite being a three-time Grands Prix winner. Perhaps more impressively was the fact that he did it on the famous streets of Monte Carlo with a car that is still inferior to Mercedes on engine power. The excellence of Adrian Newey’s Red Bull chassis in slow corners makes up the deficit.
Coupled with Ricciardo’s exuberant and aggressive driving style, it made for an epic combination around the formidable Monaco street circuit.
“I knew coming into the weekend we had a strong chance and it looked good from Thursday. I feel like I have been driving well the last few races but hadn’t got maximum reward. I came into the weekend feeling I could be in this position now. It feels good. I have always enjoyed this place. We have a good package and it is nice to make the most of it.” ~ Daniel Ricciardo
