Lauda thinks a friendship between these two is the best joke he’s heard in years. And it’s only about to get worse.
Hamilton and Rosberg have reportedly resolved their differences over a relaxed 20-minute poolside chat, according to the former. Surely, such a tale might placate the naive wishful thinkers among us, but Niki Lauda is not among them. He’s even gone so far as to call Hamilton a liar for spreading such irresponsible tosh.
“Lewis lied about that. Simple as that. He just said something. He wanted to be the softener in order to have his peace last weekend.
“He does what he can. The fight gets hotter the longer Nico is in front.”
Lauda claims that Hamilton’s animosity towards Rosberg burns so strong that he trashed his driver’s room in Baku after crashing in the qualifying race.
“He did it because he crashed. He’ll have to pay for it, you can count on that.
“He told me I couldn’t come in because he was going to destroy everything. This is how it was.”
When your rivalry with someone incites you to actual physical violence, you know it’s messy. And that violence has manifested itself in both drivers time and time again on the track, given how aggressively they’ve both been treating one another when they’re neck to neck. If the public can openly sense their hostility, we’re guessing it’s umpteen times worse when no one is looking.
