Haas Target Q3 in Tight Midfield Battle

Haas team principal Gunther Steiner admits that even though the team’s 28 point tally so far goes beyond anything they expected in their debut season, failure to get more points on the board will be an opportunity wasted.

Haas have achieved what no new team in the modern era has – Be competitive from race one. Romain Grosjean defied expectation in the opening two rounds, managing 6th in Australia and 5th in Bahrain. The Frenchman has subsequently scored points in Russia and Austria.

Haas currently sit 8th in the constructors, four points behind McLaren but comfortably ahead of Renault, Manor and the pointless Sauber. The McLarens are very visible target, and Steiner wants to see his drivers optimize this unexpected opportunity.

The Haas man said,

“I would say it is brutal in the midfield, which is where we are in the standings. We just need to make sure the cars are as prepared as possible, the tyres are in the range they need to be, the drivers are hitting their marks perfectly, and that we go out on the track at the right time.

It ends up being a lot of ingredients that we have to get together, but I think getting to Q3 is achievable. We just need to work on all of the above points.”

Esteban Gutierrez is yet to score for his team, a string of 11th place finishes leaves him closer to scoring than any of the other nil-points brigade. The Mexican is needs to step up now more than ever, a points finish in Austria is probably needed to keep the gap to McLaren in the single digits, because the Honda-powered duo of Alonso and Button will be very strong in Hungary.
