There was little evidence of ‘driver coaching’ during the German GP despite the lift on radio restrictions, which is obviously a good thing.
The only thing that the softening of the radio restriction provided was more communication between driver and engineer. Here are some of the most entertaining radio messages from the weekend.
“Box Sebastian, box.” (Ferrari)
“Negative, I’m going to take a couple more laps. Tyre are still good.” (Vettel)
“It’s the only way we have to undercut someone. Box now.” (Ferrari)
“They’re miles away, who do you want to undercut!?” (Vettel)
This highlighted who’s in charge in the Ferrari garage. Ferrari saw sense and listened to Vettel, who had already realized by this point that they weren’t catching the Mercedes or the Red Bulls up the road.
“He pushed me off track!” (Verstappen)
“Can you explain to them that I was on full lock on the steering wheel and that I couldn’t steer any more. And he moved in braking. That was the big problem, that’s completely not allowed!” (Rosberg)
One of the most dramatic moments from the German Grand Prix. Both drivers did something they shouldn’t have. Verstappen wiggled in the braking zone and Rosberg forced the Dutchman wide as a gift of instant karma. Rosberg was penalized and Verstappen lives to weave another day.
“Did you change the front wing? Because it feels like you didn’t drop it…” (Raikkonen)
Raikkonen’s race was so anonymous that this radio message was one of his more entertaining moments throughout the Grand Prix. Signature bluntness from the Iceman.
“Esteban’s my favourite, I love this guy.” (Ricciardo)
The Aussie transmits astronomical sarcasm here, in hope that Gutierrez might get out of the way when he see’s the blue flags. He didn’t… Again.
