Valtteri Bottas has emerged as a target for Renault in 2017. A Finnish reporter has confirmed that the Williams driver has the offer on the table, but Valtteri’s view remains in the dark.
Renault seem to be the most active in the pursuit for a better 2017 driver line-up. It isn’t clear whether one of their current drivers or both are vulnerable to losing their race seats, but Sergio Perez, Carlos Sainz, Esteban Ocon and now Valtteri Bottas are being linked with the team, who are hoping to emerge as the surprise package next season.
According to French sources, the Finnish F1 reporter said,
“I know for sure that he has offers from both Williams and Renault at the moment.
It is impossible to get a comment from those involved – especially the drivers at this time of year. Valtteri says nothing, as I understand it.”
– Valtteri Bottas
Renault are an exciting prospect in that they’re a works team that are yet to show their full capabilities as a debt-free, fully prepared outfit. 2017 will definitely see an improvement, but on what level? This will either be a ‘he who dares wins’ scenario or a ‘WTF have you just done to your career’ moment. Especially for Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez, both of whom would be taking a step-down in terms of the 2016 benchmark.
With Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul stating that he wants a ‘Charismatic’ driver to lead next year’s line-up, he’s either expecting a drastic change in form with his current pairing, or is looking to bring in a driver who already has a proven record combined with a hunger to win races and lead. That doesn’t sound good for Jolyon Palmer or K-Mag.
Williams will surely try and retain Bottas for a fifth season. It’s unlikely that Button’s recent link to the team is based on the Finn’s exit.
