Haas’ fresh blood Kevin Magnussen is confident that the 2017 F1 cars will be a boon to his driving style – and he’s chomping at the bit to get out and tear it up.
Magnussen has been easy to single out as one of the most vocal supporters of the incoming F1 2017 regulation changes. Magnussen has spoken out in the past – before he had a chance to step into a 2017 F1 model, mind you – that he believes that it’s just a bit too easy to hit the “limit” in an F1 car. By that he means just how long it takes for your sorry ass to start slipping and sliding all over the place out on the track.
He’s not wrong. Go back and watch some of the races from 2016 and you’d be hard-pressed to not see someone slide into a turn before the grip rips them back onto the track. Thankfully, Magnussen feels, this is something that the ’17 cars will eliminate.
“I’m a driver that, if I have a problem, it’s most of the time because I’m overdriving.
I naturally tend to overdrive the car. And these new cars will probably suit that better than less downforce. So, yeah, I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be fun to try. If our expectations are true, then they’re going to be the fastest Formula 1 cars… ever, probably, so that would be exciting.” – Kevin Magnussen
While more downforce is certainly to have some negative consequences that we’re going to get keenly acquainted with over the season, for now it seems to rest as a big step in the right direction for a lot of drivers.
That being said, it is a little funny to see just how many have reported that their winter training has involved hitting the gym non-stop to prepare themselves for the additional downforce.
