Within the myriad of changes for the ’17 season, the new Formula One cars are expected to have significantly more braking power to deal with – and the impacts could be far-reaching.
A new year, a new chance to improve and tinker with the old way of doing things. It’s too bad the majority of us tend to only stick to the same-old same-old. Thankfully, the engineers and mechanics behind the Formula One teams have mastered the art of change and continue to push the sport into uncharted territory. True to its prototypical nature, these new F1 cars are being called “beasts” with good reason.
A recent look into the ’17 models brake pads reveals a larger pad to accommodate for the additional downforce the cars (and drivers) are experiencing. Mauro Piccoli from F1 brake pad supplier Brembo offered insight in the technical decision-making that went into the larger pads.
“The level of grip is higher so you can basically transmit more force in a shorter time under braking. That results in the peak of braking torque – and we are predicting a 25 percent jump.”

While engineers might have the formulas and math worked out, we’re still quite far from seeing how these changes will affect the nature of the races. Many have voiced concern – particularly the drivers – that the power of these new cars is going to lead to less opportunities for passing as they’ll basically be able to brake even later into sharp corners.
Again, it’s mostly theoretical this point with the season still yet to begin. Let’s just hope that the revised mid-season tweaking policy will help prevent any sort of stagnant
