We are living in a post-factual world in which a lack of critical thinking allows political leaders to incite fear into their subject with ease. The Mexican Grand Prix initiative using the #BridgesNotWalls hashtag opposes President Trump on his recent spree of isolationist foreign policies that directly affect Mexico.
One of the reasons that not just Formula One, but Global Sport as a whole is so crucial amidst a landscape of deliberately engineered fear, is that it encompasses an International community, finds similarities and acknowledges differences. People from different nations and cultures meet at a race track, or at a football pitch, to share a love and appreciation for something. In the current climate, this is needed more than ever.
Beyond the fan perspective, International Sports allow companies from different parts of the globe to network and collaborate. Force India driver and Mexican National Sergio Perez has been very responsive to the Anti-Mexico narrative currently engulfing the political landscape and said of the Mexican Grand Prix campaign that,
“World class International events such as the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Mexico provide an excellent opportunity to showcase to the world what the Mexican people are capable of achieving when we work together. Through this unique global platform, Mexico has been shown as a warm and welcoming destination.
The 2015 and 2016 races were award winning, 2017 promises to be even more memorable.”
– Sergio Perez
The #BridgesNotWalls hashtag has been used in a more general sense in recent weeks following the Ban of Seven Nationalities from entering the U.S and now, the regressive wall.
It is often said that there is too much politics in Formula One, but this effort from Sergio Perez is more about his Nationality being generalised and attacked. You have to have the emotional scope to imagine it happening to yourself to see the reason. Some of you will, some of you won’t, either way, the significance of these campaigns not only saves humanity a bit of dignity, but also signifies the importance of International sport as a whole. It can’t be touched by isolationism and nor should it.
