Alonso Determined to close Brutal Gap to Mercedes

Another year, another questioning of Alonso’s determination and potency as an F1 driver. Give him a car that can win and he will, but McLaren need to step up in 2017 – not just for his sake, but for their sake as a team trying to rekindle a strong presence in F1.

Fernando Alonso goes into the 2017 season without a victory in F1 since an emotional win at the Spanish Grand Prix in 2013 for Ferrari. The Spaniard remains a sleeping giant at McLaren as the team desperately try and get back to winning ways.

In a Q&A on Instagram, Alonso said,

“I’m better than ever, I’m preparing as never before and I’m going to go for it. Who knows what will really happen, I’m going to do it all. We have to be careful [because] in the races at the end of last year we were a second or a second and a half off Mercedes.

It’s a brutal gap and we must be cautious. We will see the result at the end. It is too early to make predictions. Surely Mercedes are on a trajectory to lead having won the last three world championship as they have done,” the Spaniard added.

Then Red Bull will adapt well to the new rules, but we will have to see how we all adapt. We really do not know still. F1 is always an unknown, but this year that is even more so.”

McLaren’s fuel supplier situation will only help, given that it will be BP and Castrol pushing one another to produce the most effective fuel in an internal fuel race at McLaren. Alonso is a driver that will outdrive the car regardless. Alonso dragged McLaren up to 6th last season, the team have already announced that anything short of 3rd in the upcoming season must be perceived as a failure.

The arrival at Stoffel Vandoorne in a full-time race seat will surely benefit Alonso too. Whilst Jenson Button was reliable last season, he seemed to have lost his hunger a little bit. Vandoorne will be desperate to perform from the off, and one prediction that you can guarantee is that he will give Alonso a fresh lease of competitiveness.
