Williams Wholeheartedly Backs F1 Budget Cap

Deputy Team Principle of Williams Claire Williams believes that her team would thrive off an F1 budget cap.

As Liberty Media’s takeover progresses, Formula One is likely to see a continuous stream of changes both big and small. One of the highly talked-about changes for the future of the sport is the controversial budget-cap.

While it was first brought up in 2010 as a way to try to get lower-funded teams interested in participating in Formula One, the idea never managed to gain the proper traction. Now, it’s coming back for another round of debate.

While many of the bigger-budget teams like Mercedes and Ferrari are highly cautious of the notion of losing available resources, many teams – particularly mid-range ones like Williams – are very much open to the idea. Claire Williams took to the mic to share her thoughts on the matter:

“Liberty have talked about trying to bring distribution of income to a much more equitable level in order to make sure we have a sport that thrives and is sustainable into the future.

Williams is an independent team and our budgets are around the mid-point among other teams in our sport.

For us in the middle, it gives us quite an exciting future because if they do bring about a more equitable distribution of income, obviously we will benefit from that.” – Claire Williams

One thing there isn’t a budget cap on – F1 Driver Salaries:

While it would without a doubt provide benefits to numerous teams in the sport, the budget cap was – and will continue to be – a topic of high import and controversy within the F1 community. Its implementation would cause massive waves in the sport, both accounted for and not.

It seems that the next few years under Liberty Media’s stewardship are as good as any to institute sweeping changes, yet the possibilities of us seeing such a change implemented within the next two years is arguably slim.
