Jorge Lorenzo has been watching MotoGP developments, and it seems like he’s hedging his bets on Vinales.
There is no doubt left that the most dangerous contender for the title at this portion of the MotoGP season is Maverick Vinales. The young Yamaha newcomer has stunned day after day during pre-season testing that saw him rise to the top of the time sheets repeatedly – so often that defending World Champion Marc Marquez took it upon himself to get out on the track and follow Vinales in a bid to observe the Spaniard’s riding technique.
It looks like Marquez isn’t the only rider that has had his eyes on Vinales. Ducati newcomer Jorge Lorenzo has made several intriguing observations about the blazing Yamaha rider:
“Maverick will be champion sooner or later. He’s another rider like Marquez.
I see another Marquez, unfortunately also for other riders. He is even hungrier, because he has not been champion yet.
Their speeds seem similar, they are Sunday riders and are also great at braking. I see them as very similar in every way. Maverick is a hungry rider with amazing speed.” – Jorge Lorenzo
Two Marquez-like riders out on the track will be hell to contend with for the others, but that should only come into play provided that the rest of the pack can actually catch up to them. Both Honda and Yamaha have outshone their competitors in what we’ve seen so far in their bike’s developments.
A realistic but still hopeful Lorenzo has does see some room for him and Ducati to squeeze in – even if it’s not much:
“Maverick feels very hungry and Marquez is always there. Depending on the track, we can aspire to victory.
We still don’t have a bike to fight for the title, unless things change a lot or if we are very lucky.” – Jorge Lorenzo
The Spaniard was 10th fastest at Sepang having endured a particularly difficult opening day, and then eighth at Phillip Island.
