Silver Arrows driver and three-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton distanced himself from his own comments about Ferrari whilst wondering if Mercedes can match them.
It looks like Ferrari has finally managed to bridge the development gap that Mercedes has enjoyed for so long, with the crimson team clocking in speeds that topped time-sheets again and again over the course of the test. Although they we’re pre-season test champions last season too. Kimi Raikkonen topped the lap times during the final day of testing at Barcelona, giving Mercedes the well-needed scare that it will need to step its game up.
Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton took time out of his busy schedule to give voice to the state of relations between the two teams, as well as distance himself from comments that he made about how Ferrari were bluffing earlier in the week:
“I don’t know where the bluffing came from? Did I say that? Maybe I did… I didn’t realize I was saying it. I think they have been doing a fantastic job and there is more to come from them. I think their pace here this week has really been spectacular and still Red Bull are there. I don’t know if they’ve brought their upgrade package here this week, but usually they bring it to the first race so I expect us to have a serious battle with both these teams.” – Lewis Hamilton
While it’s clearly plausible that Hamilton might have let something slip, it is a delicious possibility that Mercedes are fearful of the advances that Ferrari have made. With only two weeks on the countdown for the opening racing in Australia, Mercedes is going to be on one hell of a clock to try and come up with something to counter Ferrari’s advances.
