Formula One team Renault is taking no chances in the fight for the midfield as they prepare their new arsenal for Barcelona.
Renault is under no illusion of its place in the midfield. It’s doing better than a handful, but not by much. And with them vying with Force India for the last open seat on the F1 Strategy Group, the bumble-bee livery team won’t be wasting any time by bumbling around. Renault has proved that they’ve got capable drivers – at least in the case of Nico Hulkenberg, whose ludicrous 42 laps on one set of tires at Russia highlights the hunger to win at Renault.
Renault Technical Chief Nick Chester has commented on the performance of the team, saying that while their qualifying performances have shown improvements, they are eagerly anticipating the forthcoming upgrades they believe will give them the pace they desire:
“We’ve been qualifying well so far this season, then Sochi showed a useful improvement to our race pace.
We’ve still got a few more upgrades on the aerodynamic package for Spain, so we’re reasonably positive. We have new barge boards and an updated rear wing.
The upgrades we used in Sochi worked as expected so we made a useful step in our race pace whilst maintaining qualifying pace. There’s still more to do in this area, but we’re heading in the right direction.
We’re in the midfield fight where we expected to be, but it’s a very close battle here so we need to ensure we seize every advantage possible from the car and how we use it.” – Nick Chester
If Renault can manage to eke out Force India’s pace in the midfield, they can reasonably expect to tackle the Williams of Massa or maybe even one of the Red Bull boys. Unfortunately, upgrades for Renault means upgrades for everyone, and the playing field may very well remain more-or-less the same.
