Lewis Hamilton receives a profound gift from the Senna family

Mercedes Silver arrow Lewis Hamilton shares his thoughts regarding the gift he received from the Ayrton Senna family.

It’s not every day that a Formula One driver achieves the milestone for 65 career pole placements – and it’s most certainly not every day that they are bestowed a replica of F1 legend Ayrton Senna’s helmet. Alas, such a day was had by Lewis Hamilton, the Mercedes Silver Arrow who had achieved the landmark pole position amount set himself alongside his childhood hero, Ayrton Senna.
Senna, rightly viewed as one of Formula One’s greatest legends, was second in pole positions behind former F1 driver Michael Schumacher, who holds the F1 record with 68 pole placements. While Hamilton holds a very real chance of toppling that record during his time in Formula One, the venerated Mercedes driver took some time out of his day to share his thoughts and feelings regarding the unexpected gift that he received from the Senna family:

Hamilton wasn’t the only driver with a grin on his face as he received the helmet, Senna’s niece Bianca Senna holds that her uncle would be grinning from ear to ear if he could see Hamilton match his record:

“Our family is very happy with his achievements and I’m sure Ayrton would be in Montreal to deliver this special gift, absolutely happy in seeing his record being equaled by a driver as talented as Lewis [Hamilton] is.

We’ve known for many years that Lewis [Hamilton] is a big fan of my uncle’s – he’s actually an official Ayrton Senna Institute ambassador, supporting our actions that promote a better education for Brazilian children.”

The gift marks one of the most memorable moments to emerge from the 2017 Formula One season, and one that new ownership Liberty Media was quick to capitalize on. In no time, news, footage, and even Hamilton’s private Mercedes AMG video talking about the event were crisscrossing the globe over. What has transpired is likely to be etched in the halls of Motorsport and Formula One history – and rightfully so.

The occasion should serve as a moment to reflect upon the achievements of both past and present generations. The handing of Senna’s helmet to Hamilton is as close to a passing of the baton as the sport will ever get – but it’s significance should not be underplayed. Lewis Hamilton is undoubtedly one of the greatest drivers to have ever graced the sport of Formula One – and with his time in it extending well into the foreseeable future, he may very well go down in history as the greatest driver thus far.
