Five years after his messy divorce with Elin Nordegren made headlines, Tiger Woods has officially turned the page on his love life. Woods and Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn are engaged.
In a statement released on TigerWoods.com yesterday, Woods made the announcement public.
“During my leave of absence from the PGA Tour, Lindsey and I have been able to spend a lot more time together than if I was playing week in and week out. I’m elated to tell my supporters that I have found my soul mate, and that Lindsey and I are officially engaged to be wed.”
Vonn also made the following statement on her official Facebook page.
“I am still in shock, but Tiger and I are officially engaged! I am so unbelievably happy to have Tiger in my life and I can’t wait to begin this next journey with him. Thank you all for your support and please respect our privacy until we have more information to share.”
It’s unclear at this time how or when the celebrity couple actually got engaged, or when the two will officially tie the knot.
Rumors swirled just two months ago that a marriage was imminent, so the engagement announcement isn’t a total shock. Nathaniel Vinton, who covers skiing for the New York Daily News, floated the strong rumor in February from the FIS Alpine Skiing World Championships.
“Woods and Vonn have become a megawatt sports celebrity pairing in recent years, and in Colorado the last two weeks there has been a persistent rumor that their marriage is imminent, perhaps even on Valentine’s Day. The women’s slalom is scheduled for Saturday — and Vonn is not expected to enter.”
While the marriage rumors turned out unsubstantiated, the engagement seemed imminent nonetheless. Tiger meanwhile had his front tooth knocked out at the event after a cameraman bumped into him.
Vonn is an American World Cup alpine ski racer on the United States Ski Team. She has won four World Cup championships, with three consecutive titles in 2008, 2009 and 2010, plus another in 2012. Vonn won the gold medal in downhill at the 2010 Winter Olympics, the first ever in the event for an American woman. She has also won seven World Cup season titles in the downhill discipline (2008–2013, 2015), five titles in super-G (2009–2012, 2015), and three consecutive titles in the combined (2010–2012).
The announcement by Woods on his website is curious timing to say the least. Woods private plane flew into Augusta yesterday, where he played a private practice round. His status for the Masters next week remains uncertain at best.
The athletic powerhouse duo have been dating since March of 2013, so the engagement marks a roughly two year anniversary for the couple.
“I guess it wasn’t a well-kept secret but yes, I am dating Tiger Woods. Our relationship evolved from a friendship into something more over these past few months and it has made me very happy,” said Vonn at the time their relationship was made public.
“Something nice that’s happened off the course was meeting Lindsey Vonn. Lindsey and I have been friends for some time, but over the last few months we have become very close and are now dating,” said Woods in 2013.
The 14 time major winner has been on a leave of absence since February, after he withdrew from the Honda Classic with an injury. The silver lining appears to be that he had more time on his hands to romance with Vonn.
Woods has two children from his previous marriage. A daughter, Sam Alexis Woods, was born in 2007 and a son, Charlie Axel Woods, born in 2009.
