TPC Harding Park — Seeking a second straight comeback, Rory McIlroy delivered another grandstand finish Sunday in the Match Play Championship.
Having dismantled Paul Casey at the crack of dawn, McIlroy birdied the 16th and 17th holes to level the match at TPC Harding Park before ripping a huge drive down the 18th fairway. Faced with a 45 footer to win the match, the world number 1 proved again why he’s still an arms length above his competitors as the ball rolled into the center of the cup.
The victory set up a championship match against big hitting Gary Woodland.
It was the third time in four days where McIlroy was behind late in the match and won. Sunday marks the second final in four years for the Irishman.
Meanwhile, Woodland easily dismantled Englishman Danny Willet when he birdied the 16th hole for a 3-and-2 victory.
