Round 1 of the 2015 U.S. Open featured plenty of highs and certainly lots of lows.
For Tiger Woods, every-time we think he’s hit rock bottom he finds a new low. Two weeks ago at the Memorial it was his third round 85. During the opening round at Chambers Bay, Tiger shot a (+10) round of 80. That was still better than Rickie Fowler though, who finished (+11) – and that includes an eagle in the round.
While Tiger and Rickie struggled, several of golf’s biggest names played well. Both Henrik Stenson and Dustin Johnson shot rounds of 65, and they’re your co-leaders after day one.
Here’s some round 1 reaction to get you set for day two and the weekend:
1. Tiger Woods: (+10) 80
“The bright side is at least I kicked Rickie’s butt today.”
2. Phil Mickelson (-1) 69
“Everyone is going to make bogeys (here). It’s the doubles that you want to try to avoid. To make that one (a 15-foot putt) and not make any doubles, that was a big one for me.”
3. Dustin Johnson: (-5) 65
“I really felt like I swung it well and hit a lot of quality iron shots. So the confidence is definitely there. I feel really good about where I’m at going into tomorrow.”
4. Henrik Stenson: (-5) 65
“One day out of four done, and we’re right there with where we want to be. It’s still a long journey until Sunday afternoon.”
