The Florida-based Scot Russell Knox will step up to the tee and take Rory McIlroy’s place after his ankle injury forced him out of the Open Championship at St Andrews.
The 30-year-old from Inverness learned of his inclusion while playing in the Pro-Am at Gullane. “Nobody wants to gain because another player is injured, so it is a horrible way to sneak in but I am very happy.”
Florida-based Knox has joked about emulating John Daly who won the PGA Championship after being a reserve in 1991. “I’m going to go all John Daly on everyone, get in at the last minute and go on to win!
We appreciate Knox’s optimistic outlook, however he has only ever competed in two majors with his best result finishing tied 45th at the 2013 US Open. Good luck to him but we doubt he will make the same impact as Rory would have done.
