University of Michigan Wants To Promote Golf To Millennials; Opens Up 2 Courses To Public

For years, University of Michigan’s courses, the Blue and the Radrick Farms courses, have been difficult to access for golfers who are not affiliated with the prestigious school. That is changing this summer when the school announced Saturday that its two courses, built by Alister MacKenzie and Peter Dye, would be opening up to the public in an effort to boost golf rounds in the region, especially amongst Generation Y golfers.

To play either course costs around $110 Monday through Thursday and $140 Friday through Sunday, well under the price of typical signature designed golf courses. What’s even sweeter is that the price includes the cart fee, a cap or towel, as well as a lunch voucher.

The steep costs of golf green fees has detracted millennial golfers from taking up the game, but initiatives like University of Michigan’s is sure to boost numbers.

The Stadium course is a bucket-list venue which opened in 1931. While many of MacKenzie’s courses are private, the Stadium course is now one of only a few of his designs that is accessible to the public.

“I think over there people are just thrilled to be on a MacKenzie,” said Corbin Todd, director of the U-M golf course.
