Phil Mickelson finally chimed in on the Donald Trump saga on Friday when he was surprisingly sympathetic towards the Republican Party’s latest bigot.
Mickelson told reporters that Donald Trump’s stereotype of Mexican immigrants as rapists “doesn’t take away from all that he’s done to try to help better golf.”
Mickelson then praised Trump for turning around the fortunes of various golf courses around the world, such as Doral in Florida which hosts the annual WGC-Cadillac Championship.
This month, Trump boasted that people in the “golf world” were rallying behind him because they “all know I’m right” about Mexican immigrants.
“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists,” Trump said during his presidential announcement in June.
While Mickelson was explicit that he didn’t “agree” with Trump’s stance on immigrants, he still “appreciates” Trump as a businessman and television star.
