How Rory McIlroy saved himself $20,000 by saying sorry

Rory McIlroy, known for his unruffled demeanor, threw a rare tantrum at the WGC-Cadillac Championship by throwing his 3-iron into a lake. This was apparently a fineable offense that might have cost Rory something to the tune of $25,000, if he’d been much more unrepentant about it. But trust on him to do the level-headed thing. He revealed:

“The fine was reduced from $25,000 to $5,000 because I said I was sorry in the interview afterwards.”

If we’ve learned one thing from Rory McIlroy, it’s that savoring that humble pie isn’t just the right thing to do. It’s the smart thing to do.
