- The biannual competition has been hosted outside the UK and America once before.
- The News means Britain won’t host until at least 2026.
The Ryder cup was hosted on the continent for the first time at Golf Valderrama in Spain (1997) and there has been growing calls for the tournament to be played outside the UK more frequently. France will host the tournament at Le Golf National in 2018 and the latest move announced today will see another country accept the honour of hosting the event.
According to the Ryder Cup homepage “four nations – Austria, Germany, Italy and Spain – had participated in an exhaustive and comprehensive Bid Process to identify the country best qualified to follow Hazeltine National in Minnesota next year,” with the committee reaching a final decision today.
It was announced that the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club, near Rome, will be the host of the 2022 tournament. “I would like to offer my congratulations to Italy whose bold and ambitious bid has seen them become the host nation for The 2022 Ryder Cup. History has shown time and again that The Ryder Cup is pure theatre with the players the stars, and there is no question that the Eternal City of Rome will provide a wonderful backdrop for one of the great occasions in world golf, ” said European Tour commissioner, Keith Pelley.
The news came as the Prize fund is lifted from its current level of €1.5 million to €3 million for 2016. Why did I assume the players did it for free?
