- The world number one made the comments going into the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship this week.
- This is the first time the two have gone head-to-head this year.
The golf world is salivating with the prospect of what’s been the worst kept secret in European Tour Golf. I am of course referring the announcement that Rory and Jordan will be paired for the first two rounds of the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship.
Asked if Rory was a threat; “In a season that he considered lost, he still came back and ended up winning the Race To Dubai and that proves what a player he is,” Spieth said. “I’m sure there are very few players who have been working harder than he is to make this season his best season yet – and that is scary. Hopefully I can prevent that to an extent,” he told the Daily Telegraph.
Not quite the words of a shaken man, but every golf fan knows that Jordan’s emphatic victory in Hawaii two weeks ago was aided by a tentative Day comeback and a McIlroy absence. The Northern Irishman has been in Abu Dhabi sometime and has reportedly been playing a hella lot of golf.
The bookies make Spieth odds on favourite at 4-9, with Rory placed at 2-1 to succeed. As for the ‘scary’ comments, I think if any of these two had the mental instability to doubt themselves for a second, which they don’t, it will be Rory this week.
