Spain sources claim that Neymar and Barcelona have reached a verbal agreement over new contract terms for the Brazilian star. The ballon d’or will be second only to Lionel Messi in the club’s wage hierarchy.
Sport claim that whilst the terms of the deal may be agreed, Neymar isn’t expected to sign until the end of the current season; Barcelona taking their time to draw up an immaculate contract for the 24-year-old to sign.
The Catalonian giants are moving to lock down the talented winger after he reportedly rejected interest from Manchester United, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.
Another cause for caution with Neymar’s new deal is to prevent any further legal problems for the Brazilian and his family. The player recently found himself in court charged with tax evasion so understandably the club are working to sort out all legal and tax issues themselves so that the Brazilian doesn’t have to.
Brazilian authorities have started to freeze the 24-year-old’s assets worth 192 million reals (approx £35m), including a yacht, a jet and several properties in his homeland.
Neymar and his family were found guilty of evading tax to the tune of around £11m between 2011 and 2013 during his Santos playing days – although the player has always denied any knowingly participating in any illegal activity.
