Imagine being such a poor signing that Fifa actually pay your club for the misfortunate of having to pay your wages.
That’s exactly the position that former Arsenal captain and Belgian international Thomas Vermaelen now finds himself in…
Barcelona have received €2m (£1.56m) in compensation from FIFA, after Vermaelen suffered an injury in the last World Cup, picking up a thigh problem playing for Belgium against Russia.
The former Arsenal captain and fan favourite managed only 62 minutes during his first season with the Catalonian giants, a shockingly poor investment for the £15million transfer fee Barcelona paid for him.
The Belgian, who returns to the Emirates for the first time in the Champions League tonight, moving from North London to Camp Nou in 2014.
Vermaelen admitted coming up against the Gunners will be “special”.
“It’s a special game for me, it’s a match against a team that I spent five years of my life at and that I have great memories of. So it’s going to be special.”
