Cristiano Ronaldo may have lost out on the Ballon d’Or to Lionel Messi again in January but the Portuguese star can now boast that he is officially more popular than the Barcelona forward.
The Real Madrid star is the first ever athlete to reach 200 million followers across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram social media platforms and averages 135,000 new fans across social media every single day.
Ronaldo’s startling statistics easily trumps those of his long-time rival’s 120.8m followers on social media, though it is worth noting that the Argentine does not have a Twitter account.
Ronaldo has 109.7m followers on Facebook, 49.6m on Instagram and 40.7m on Twitter after a “meteoritic rise” in popularity, according to social media tracking database Hookit.
The rightfully self-confident winger now boasts more followers than prominent past and present NBA stars Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Steph Curry’s combined 187m.
Hookit also outlined that Ronaldo saw nearly one billion interactions on social media last year and added 41.8m new followers, the majority of whom came from his Instagram account.
