The threat of Jose Mourinho is looming over much-maligned Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal, despite last week’s Europa League victory. And to make it clear that he continues to eye the position, Mourinho has just come up with a wishlist for who he wants on his ideal defensive team when (not if!) he gets the job. He’s expressed an interest in landing John Stones, Marc Bartra, Aymeric Laporte, Marquinhos or Raphael Varane.

He has good reason to aggressively tackle Manchester United’s defences. The team has been suffering a dearth of defensive power after it was shot full of holes by a slew of injuries, with Chris Smalling being the latest victim. Phil Jones and Marcus Rojo have also long been on the sidelines and no one can say whether Daley Blind will remain permanently on the backline. Right now, Michael Carrick is serving as centre-back.

Right now, Van Gaal is trying to address the issue by eying a couple of options from afar. Hull City left-back Andrew Robertson has been an object of interest for the Reds after being Hull’s most consistent performer this season’s Championship. Juventus flier Alex Sandro is another coveted figure and the Reds have already gone head to head with rivals Man City to add him to their ranks. Their bid was rejected then, but the 25-year old Brazilian could be set for a move from Serie A to the Premier League during close season and they might have their chance then. That is, if Van Gaal is still there by that time.
