- Jason Day and Tiger Woods have become close friends
- Day called Woods for some advice before going head to head with Spieth and McIlroy this week at Doral
Jason Day is paired with Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy for only the second time ever at Doral this week. The pressure is on and Day felt like he needed advice, so he phoned a friend, who just happened to be Tiger Woods.
“Every time that I talk to him, it’s mindset, mental toughness, effort,” Day said. “It didn’t matter how bad it was; if it was a course that he did not like, he was just going to flat out-execute you. It did not matter. That’s that killer instinct that I need to get back like I had at the second half of last year, get back and take it into this year and go through with it.”
Day won five PGA Tour titles in 2015, including the PGA Championship. Four out of five of the titles were won in the last three months of the season.
“I have the killer instinct — I do, it’s down there, but it just hasn’t come out yet [this year],” he said. “Once it does, I’m hoping that I can replicate the second half of last year. But it’s amazing to be able to talk to someone that’s done it for so long, because [Woods] did it for 14, 15 years of just absolutely dominating and killing it. If there’s a better person to talk to about it, that was him.”
It’s nice to have Tiger Woods as a friend, especially when seeking advice about a game he clearly knows. The pressures of wanting to stay on top is something that Tiger has dealt with his entire career, no matter how easy he made it look. It seems as though Tiger’s advice revolves around the mental game, that it’s all about what’s inside that makes all the difference. Day wants to channel the mind set and ambition that Tiger had.
It would definitely boost my confidence if I had Tiger Woods in the corner of my ring. We’ll see if his advice helps Day out at all this week at the WGC-Cadillac Championship.
