This Is How The United States Beats Guatemala

When your back’s against the wall, you gotta get creative.

If the United States doesn’t get three points out of this game, there’s a real chance they will miss the World Cup. After that stinker of a game in Guatemala, the boys need to regroup and switch up their game plan.

It’s Howard. Hopefully he lathered his beard in lucky shampoo last night – the US needs a shutout.

Steve Birnbaum has been playing well for club and country. With Geoff Cameron in there next to him to run the show, the young defender should be alright. He’s dangerous in the air. Look for him on corner kicks and free kicks.

Yedlin’s gotta return to the back four. He’s a fine winger, but he’s needed at right back for this game.

The midfield four were not in sync during the first leg. Mix is out of the mix.

Darlington Nagbe is technically and tactically sound and loves to get forward. The US doesn’t have anyone better on the roster to play attacking mid. Baptism by fire.

Zardes and Zusi (added to roster after first leg) are in on the wings. They’ll be zippin’ up the flanks and zingin’ in crosses.

Dempsey and Wood had plenty of chances to score in the first game. They won’t make the same mistakes again.

Altidore didn’t show me anything as a substitute to earn back his starting spot.
