SEE ALSO: Aston Villa Suffer The Ultimate Football Humiliation
What an earth has gone on at Aston Villa? This season is the culmination of four campaigns of malpractice and the ripping the heart out of a club. A club that will no longer be able to claim to be one of the few teams that have been in the Premier League since its inception.
Remi Garde’s woeful four-month spell in charge of the Villains has got to go down as one of the weirdest and most pointless managerial appointments in recent years – it’s not quite Pepe Mel and Felix Magath levels of absurdity, though.
Rumours of dressing room unrest and false promises around transfer policy emerged pretty soon after the former Lyon man took over. Therefore meaning that yesterday’s attempt at burying of bad news during the second-half of the England game had been a long time coming.
Garde built up a well-deserved reputation with Lyon and will no doubt go on to be a success somewhere else. However, he was, and always will be, the wrong appointment for Villa given their situation when he took over in November – there’s probably an argument to be made that Tim Sherwood shouldn’t have been sacked in the first place.
Sunderland had the right idea when Dick Advocaat stepped aside in October, leaving the Black Cats second bottom and without a win, by appointing relegation-avoider extraordinaire, Sam Allardyce.
Crystal Palace did something similar with Tony Pulis and West Bromwich Albion followed the same train of thought with the same man. Villa should’ve moved for someone like Harry Redknapp, given him a short-term six-month contract, with an inflated bonus should they avoid relegation and then rebuild again in the summer as a Premier League outfit.
Instead they’ve just well and truly fucked it and are now just another example to the rest of the Premier League teams that you cannot stand still in the top flight because eventually you’ll bottom out. Just ask Fulham or Portsmouth or any of the others on that long list of sides that used to be ‘established’ top flight sides.
Would the last one to leave Villa Park turn off the lights.
