Arnold Palmer was out doing the rounds at his own tournament yesterday. He spent much of the day watching his grandson Sam Saunders but seemed to be everywhere in his cart, a priceless Rolex wrapped prominently around his wrist.

It was slightly disappointing that so many American players chose to skip this year’s tournament. Not one American player inside the world’s top 10 was playing – all five Europeans were. Some of the excuses didn’t rub for me, especially considering the recent concerns about Arnie’s health. Don’t assume that means the King doesn’t still have some lead in the pencil.
Jason Day stole the show yesterday with 6 birdies and one eagle as he took the lead with a 66. Rory McIlroy struggled, finishing 9 shots back from Day. The Northern Irishman played one of the more impressive shots of the day, hitting a 4-iron 250 into the wind is no mean feat.
Here’s how they finished after the first round.
