Thomas Vermaelen could be set for a Premier League return, with reports today suggesting that Jurgen Klopp has made a concrete offer for the Barcelona defender.

The Belgium international, who made 110 starts in five seasons for Arsenal, somehow managed to bag himself a move to the Nou Camp despite losing his place with the Gunners (even though he was club captain).
Things haven’t gone to plan at Barca, either, for the 30-year-old but is he what Liverpool need?

Sakho’s impending ban – which is expected to be a minimum of six-months – has made the need for defensive reinforcements an urgent one for Klopp.
Dejan Lovren has looked like he is close to returning to the form that saw Liverpool buy him from Southampton. However, the Reds can certainly upgrade on the Croatian centre-back.
You’ve then got Martin Skrtel, who is expected to leave this summer, and the comical Kolo Toure as defensive options. Therefore, you can understand the desire of Klopp to strengthen with proven Premier League experience.

Only TV5 knows if he went to Barca with the genuine belief he’d be able to displace one of Javier Mascherano and Gerard Pique – but we all knew he was only going there merely to make up the numbers.
Due to the former Ajax man’s significant lack of playing time in Spain – seven La Liga starts – it’s hard to know whether the Belgium international is over his injury troubles. If he is, and can replicate his debut season in England at Anfield, then the reported £8million fee could end up being one of the bargains of the season.
