How often do you see the eventual winner of a golf tournament do this? Charley Hoffman was a man on a mission during the Valero Texas Open. He’s been in contention all season but has consistently failed to deliver on the weekend. In his last 16 rounds he’s finished inside the top ten on 11 separate occasions. Spending much of his time in the top three he kept slipping away on Saturday and Sunday.
“It’s been a rough month and a half,” Hoffman said. “That’s where ‘It’s about time’ comes from. Obviously I had good feelings coming into this week and knew I needed to close the door.”
Hoffman seems like a popular guy, he showed real nerve getting up and down on the par 5 18th to beat Patrick Read by one shot. Holing a nine footer on the last won him some respect from the notoriously combative and divisive Read.
“When you’re one up going into the last hole and you have to hit a drive down the middle of the fairway and hit those two golf shots and the bunker shot and to make that putt just shows that he was ready to win a golf tournament.”
It’s really refreshing to see a professional do something amateurish, and it’s even better when they laugh about it afterwards. The fact he went on to par the hole and eventually win the competition is the cherry on top.
This happens more often than you would think. We had a few to chose from but this is easily my favourite…two in a row followed by the words, “make her cut it out,” just brilliant.
