Football hooliganism may be going out of style, but it’s not dead.
The phenomenon reared its ugly head during the recent Manchester United – West Ham clash.

While the two teams don’t have a historic rivalry, it was West Ham’s last game at Boleyn Ground, which has been their home since 1904.
112 years. That’s four generations of history right there, so an emotionally charged atmosphere is par for the course when your team is playing its last game at a legendary ground.
But the West Ham fans took it way too far. Kickoff was delayed 45 minutes because Manchester United’s bus was stranded in the parking lot, surrounded by thousands of rioting West Ham fans.
The FA addressed the incident in an official statement:
“THE FA STRONGLY CONDEMNS THE UNSAVOURY INCIDENTS THIS EVENING INVOLVING BOTH THE MANCHESTER UNITED TEAM COACH OUTSIDE WEST HAM UNITED’S BOLEYN GROUND AND OBJECTS THROWN FROM A SECTION OF THE HOME SUPPORT DURING THE GAME.”
“WE WILL WORK CLOSELY WITH BOTH CLUBS AND THE METROPOLITAN POLICE TO FULLY INVESTIGATE THESE MATTERS.”
Official FA statement
West Ham’s co-chairman David Sullivan also condemned the attack:
“I WANT TO APOLOGIZE TO MANCHESTER UNITED FOR THAT DAMAGE AND ASSURE THEM THAT WE WILL BE DOING ALL WE CAN TO TRACK DOWN THOSE RESPONSIBLE AND BAN THEM FOR LIFE.”
Even West Ham supporters were quick to denounce the behavior of their fellow fans:
“DAMN, THAT IS DISGUSTING. FUCK WHATEVER FANS ARE DOING THAT, GIVING US ALL A SHIT NAME, RUINING SUCH A HISTORIC EVEN. LITERALLY NO EXCUSE FOR THAT .”

A riot might sound like fun when you’re joking with your homies, but in real life, everyone loses.
