Pope Francis has agreed to eschew his papal duties for a few hours to tend the net for Juventus in the upcoming Coppa Italia final.
Juventus’ goalie, living legend Gianluigi Buffon, will assume the Pope’s responsibilities during the match.
The Pope was wasn’t sold on the idea at first because he thought the players were mocking him. When he realized what they were actually asking, he was all for it.
“I THOUGHT THEY WERE TAKING A PISS. I READ THE JERSEY AS ‘BUFFOON’ AT FIRST. I ALMOST PUNCHED HIM.”
“BUT THEN I REALIZED GIGI WANTED ME TO PLAY IN GOAL FOR HIM AND WE ALL HAD A GOOD LAUGH.”
Serie A heavyweights Juventus and Milan will meet in a battle of Italian giants to see who takes home the trophy and bragging rights for a year.
While Juventus will be sorely missing their world-beating netminder, Buffon’s teammates understood that this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for him.
“YEAH, WE’D LIKE TO HAVE HIM IN GOAL, BUT HE’S ALWAYS WANTED TO BE POPE.”
“HE PROBABLY WON’T GET ANOTHER CHANCE, SO WE FULLY SUPPORT HIM. ALL HAIL POPE GIGI!”
Giorgio Chiellini, Juventus defender
Pope Francis was approached with the idea after he jointly addressed A.C. Milan and Juventus players about the importance of setting a good example for fans who look up to them. He reminded players just how much influence they have on millions of malleable young minds around the globe and challenged them to be paragons of virtue for the next generation to emulate.
“POPIN’ AIN’T EASY.”
I think it’s safe to say that Pope Francis is the coolest pope in the past 1,000 years.
Definitely rooting for him to keep a clean sheet against Milan. Go Juve!
